Vlora is undertaking a significant upgrade of its water metering systems, a crucial step towards enhancing network efficiency, reducing water losses, and ensuring accurate consumption data. This ambitious initiative, part of the WPIP MIP V programme, extends its reach across all city districts, benefiting both tourist hotspots and residential areas alike, as engineers and workers implement improvements throughout DMA (District Metered Areas) covered by the project.
Significant progress is evident with the installation of 58,795 meters of new primary piping, representing approximately 63.8% of the planned system extension. Alongside this, 17,891 meters of consumer connection pipes have been laid, improving access for both formal and informal sectors. The deployment of 5,415 new water meters will enable precise, real-time usage data, while 242 new supply nodes have been integrated to bolster network connectivity.
Quality control remains a top priority in this comprehensive overhaul. Approximately 12.036 m/l pressure tests have been rigorously conducted to confirm the integrity of the newly installed network components. Furthermore, nearly 851 new meter boxes have been installed, which will support prompt issue detection and contribute to more efficient overall system management.
These metering enhancements are a core component of the WPIP MIP V programme’s extensive campaign to modernize Vlora’s water infrastructure. The successful implementation of this project is made possible by crucial funding and support from the European Union, KfW (the German development bank), and SECO (the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs). Their contributions are instrumental in driving sustainable development and significantly reducing resource losses across the region.
